The concept sounds simple, but the character development, conflicts, and emotional depth are beautifully complex. I loved that although the characters were in their thirties, this read like a coming-of-age book as Andy navigated this rough time and made discoveries about himself along the way. You’ll love this if you love when a book makes you laugh AND cry, if you want to get to know a character inside and out, and if you’ve ever struggled with the end of a relationship.

Nightmare Alley is not a pleasant or an uplifting story, but rather a gut wrenching and honest tale of the carnival/ freak show life in the 1940s. Even though you are following the story of a man who is notoriously unlikable, it is so well written and psychologically deep that you get sucked into his spiral of greed and arrogance  and ruination of his life and those around him.  I know this doesn't seem like the most positive book review, but I promise it was fantastic and that I actually enjoyed it.

In the Florida panhandle in 1950, Robbie kicks the older boy harassing his sister. Because the boy is white and Robbie is Black, young Robbie is sent to the Gracetown School for Boys, the county reformatory. Due’s crafted a page-turning work of historical fiction, based on the tragedy of her own relative’s time at the Dozier School. It’s harrowing and beautifully written. Once I picked this up, I had a hard time putting it down.

This book is a testament to how strong women are! A romance wrapped in a self-discovery journey, this book is so mature and beautifully written. Soledad is living a comfortable life with her husband and 3 daughters until something catastrophic happens and causes their lives to change dramatically. Soledad is forced to find a way forward to support herself and her girls, and along the way she rediscovers who she is - by the end of this book you’ll feel like Soledad is your best friend. And the romance in this book? Absolutely PERFECT. Soledad and Judah must be protected at all costs. And on top of all of that, this book also has amazing autism representation. This is the second installment in the Skyland series (book 1 was Before I Let Go), but it can be read as a standalone.

A compulsively readable book that explains, in no uncertain terms, how our fortunes are bound to the fortunes of others. McGhee’s sterling credentials and impeccable research informs this clear-eyed and empathetic argument for racial equity. Ultimately, I found this to be a hopeful book, affirming that we really are all in this together.
