A Heidi Staff Pick
A captivating, tense, page turner of a psychological thriller that I gobbled up in one glorious day. Beverly-Whittemore has created a world full of luscious details, from the wilderness of Maine, to the ritual of baking sourdough, to the tender and distinct gestures of children. I was particularly taken with the various settings - a loft in Soho, a rambling house in Connecticut, and the homestead camp-like grounds in Maine. The scientific and common names of plants and animals are woven into the story, adding a layer of magic in that naming, that knowing. The characters themselves are just as compelling, and I felt every moment I lived inside the head of Saskia, the main character and narrator. FIERCE LITTLE THING is my favorite novel of the summer so far, not one for the faint of heart, but deeply satisfying for those of us who love a story that lingers in the darkness.
